Our Two-Stage Preparation Pathway

Reaching B1 proficiency requires building solid linguistic foundations before drilling specific exam strategies. We guide you through two structured stages:

Stage 1: In-Person Group Classes (Foundational Proficiency)

We ask all students to first build and strengthen their general language skills through our weekly in-person group classes at our school in San Diego:

1. Beginner: Fundamental vocabulary, basic grammar, pronunciation, and everyday conversation.
2. Beginner-Intermediate: Past tenses, object pronouns, expanded conversational fluency, and listening comprehension.
3. Intermediate: Complex grammar structures, expressive fluency, text comprehension, and writing skills.

Progression Timeline

• Accelerated Pace: A highly motivated student who studies consistently and practices outside class can complete 1 quarter (session) per level.
• Standard Pace: Typically, students take 1 quarter in Beginner, 2 quarters in Beginner-Intermediate, and 2 quarters in Intermediate to thoroughly consolidate their skills.

Stage 2: Targeted B1 Exam Preparation (Private Coaching)

Once you reach intermediate proficiency, general language study shifts to focused test preparation. The B1 citizenship exam evaluates four distinct areas under strict time limits: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written production, and an oral interview.

Because every student has unique strengths and areas for improvement, we recommend tailored private coaching for this stage:

• Diagnostic Assessment: We evaluate your current speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills against B1 exam criteria.
• Customized Study Plan: We design a focused lesson plan with a specific number of private sessions targeting your exact needs.
• Exam Simulations: Practice with authentic sample tests, timed mock tasks, and simulated oral interview scenarios.
• Flexible Format: Private preparation sessions can be conducted in person at our San Diego classroom or online via Zoom.

Important Note on Official Testing Centers

Please note that the Italian School of San Diego is an educational preparatory school and does not administer or host official exam sessions at our facility.

Students take the official B1 certification exam (such as CILS B1 Cittadinanza) at an authorized testing center recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (such as designated Italian cultural institutes or certified exam centers in California). We prepare you thoroughly so you walk into your test fully confident and ready to pass.
