Why Specialized AP Italian Preparation?

Achieving a top score (4 or 5) on the AP Italian Language and Culture exam requires more than general language fluency. Whether you are a heritage speaker already fluent in Italian or a student who has studied the language for several years, the exam measures very specific analytical, communicative, and cultural skills under timed conditions.

Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, the College Board has introduced a major redesign of the AP world language exams. The upcoming exam on Monday, May 3, 2027 differs significantly from past years:

• Fully Digital Format: The exam is administered entirely on-screen using the College Board Bluebook app.
• Speaking is 35% of the Score: Oral production is heavily weighted and structured around the new Course Project. Students deliver a 3-minute spoken presentation (20% of total score) and immediately answer four unscripted questions with 40 seconds per response (15% of total score).
• Personalized Project Reference (PPR): Students must submit a formal project sheet through the AP Digital Portfolio by April 30, 2027 based on topics released in January 2027.
• Reordered Exam Structure: The free-response section now comes first (65 to 70 minutes, including a 55-minute Argumentative Essay), followed by 55 multiple-choice interpretive listening and reading questions (80 minutes).

We offer private, one-on-one sessions customized entirely to the student’s background, strengths, and schedule. Sessions can be held online via Zoom or in person at our San Diego location in Kearny Mesa.

Instruction by our School Director

All private AP preparation is led directly by Maura D’Andrea, the Director of the Italian School of San Diego. Maura holds a Master’s degree in Education from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan) and a postgraduate specialization in “Didactics and Promotion of Italian Language and Culture to Foreigners” from Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia.

In 2026, 100% of her AP Italian students scored a 4 or a 5, and two thirds earned the top score of 5, compared to the national average of 19% scoring a 5. Read our 2026 AP Italian results.
